As imigrantes japonesas nos internatos da cidade de Manaus: Igreja do bairro de São Raimundo e Instituto Benjamin Constant

Abstract

This paper aims to describe and analyze the contribution of Japanese immigrants who lived in the boarding schools of the church in the São Raimundo neighborhood and at the Benjamin Constant Institute, from the 50’s to the 70’s, using photographs, oral reports and historical documents as primary sources. It was noticed at the beginning of the investigation process the scarcity of documents referring to these Japanese immigrants who worked in the Amazonas, which makes studies even more necessary to record their passage. As a theoretical foundation, the postulates of Michelle Perrot (2007, 2017) were adopted, who developed studies on women and their importance in society, and Maurice Halbwachs (2013), who addresses history and memory from the perspective of the individual, the collective and of society. Thus, it is intended to develop actions of women, nuns and Japanese immigrants, as a way to contribute and add their stories in the immigration context of the Amazonas.
