Estudo da viabilidade técnica do uso de rejeito de minério de bauxita como material para construção de pavimento

Abstract

In recent years, due to the environmental and social disasters caused by the breach of the Fundão dam in the municipality of Mariana-MG, and the dam of the Córrego do Feijão in the municipality of Brumadinho-MG, the need for better disposal or treatment of these tailings is essential to prevent such tragedies from recurring. This study aims to investigate the technical feasibility of using mining tailings in pavement, specifically the waste generated from bauxite ore, which is present in considerable volume in the northern region of the country. Additionally, the region lacks natural aggregates, justifying this work as a sustainable alternative material. To achieve the objectives of this research, the methodology consisted of an experimental program for the physical and geotechnical characterization of soil samples, bauxite ore tailings, and mixtures with 60% soil and 40% tailings, as well as with 70% soil and 30% tailings, along with the evaluation of mechanical behavior through the simple compression strength test. As a result of the research, there is a noteworthy improvement in a non-lateritic sandy clay soil, with a 73% increase in simple compression strength for the mixture of 60% soil and 40% tailings after 7 days of curing in a dry chamber. The contribution of this study to the scientific community is significant, as there are no references indicating results of the compaction test at intermediate energy, with only results found at normal energy.
