Minorias sexuais e de gênero: o acesso à universidade pública como direito a ser garantido

Abstract

The paper focuses on the access of sexual and gender minorities to Federal Universities through affirmative actions. Such actions are policies that seek to compensate, repair, and prevent inequalities and discrimination against minority groups in different spaces, such as the Federal University. Education as a constitutional right must reach different social groups, considering the reality, specificities, and social determinants, and its implementation must be carried out through educational policies. Based on this, the paper aims to discuss affirmative actions for the inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community in Federal Universities in the northern region. To this end, the paper is divided into three specific objectives: to conceptualize the characteristics of the LGBTQIA+ community and its regional specificities; to analyze the main policies for protecting and guaranteeing the right to higher education for sexual and gender minorities in Brazil and in the northern region, and how these policies are structured; to discuss the relationship between basic education, public universities, and the social vulnerability of LGBTQIA+ individuals. The paper uses documentary and bibliographic research as its methodology. It is concluded that the affirmative action policy is present in the federal university through the social name policy, making it necessary for the institution to understand the socio-historical reality, identity characteristics and regional specificities of the LGBTQIA+ community, including them in the creation of vacancies in selection processes and entrance exams, considering that this group is affected by social vulnerability, exclusion and discrimination in different social institutions, such as family, school and university.
