Abstract

From developments in technology, the digital era, also named as information era, came soon after and changed the role of libraries, transfiguring the handling of books to new approaches in working with information. Thusly, the present study sets the impact of technology in the role of libraries as it's keynote, examining historical and current factors. Furthermore, the present inquiry aims to reflect upon the librarian's function under the perspective of a threat to the occupation. Considering the nature, foundations, relevance and the various studies among the information science field going over technology and libraries, the present research ponders over changes in librarianship and other related topics. To this end, this analysis finds it's cornerstone in describing the perspectives and challenges that meet libraries. On a qualitative approach, this study casts integrative review as it's method and uses Scielo, BRAPCI and the CAPES' portal of publications. In addition to this, the present analysis points to the librarian's relevance in the information mediation and libraries as equalizers of knowledge. Additionally, this study highlights difficulties and possibilities of technology in science information.
