Abstract

Means of payment are modernising as technology advances and rapidly transforms the economy and society's routine. This advance has led to the replacement of physical transactions, while also bringing the possibility of financial inclusion, convenience, agility and ease for companies and consumers in terms of digital forms of payment. The objective of this research was to investigate, based on a literature review, the relationship between advances in digital technology and the evolution of payment methods. This is a qualitative approach, with descriptive purposes and, in terms of methods, it is a narrative bibliographic research that uses elements of Systematic Literature Review (SLR), based on Tranfield, Denyer and Smart (2003), Paul and Criado (2020), and Galvão and Ricarte (2020), since it was necessary to conduct a detailed study to understand the relationship between the evolution of digital technologies and means of payment.The Scopus, Scielo.org and Spell databases were used to select articles, identifying 12 studies that met all the established criteria and converged with the purpose of the research. As a result, it was found that digital technology strongly drives the transformation of payment methods, making them more efficient, accessible and aligned with the needs of consumers and businesses. Central banks and regulators play a crucial role in ensuring the regularity and effective functioning of the systems.
