Abstract

This research addresses the home sign system used between a deaf woman and her mother living in a riverside area of ​​the Amazon. Its general objective is to analyze the home sign system, specifically the signs for food, and the interaction between the hearing mother and her deaf daughter living in the riverside community. The specific objectives are: to investigate how the deaf woman from the riverside community in the lower Amazon uses the home sign system to identify terms within the semantic field of food, and to analyze how the interaction between the deaf daughter, a user of the home sign system, and her hearing mother occurs. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, terminological cards from the semantic field of food were employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the presentation of an album of the semantic field of food with images. Theoretically supported by Kumada (2012), Almeida-Silva and Nevins (2020), Le Guen, Coppola, Safar (2020) and Cerqueira (2021). The results demonstrate that the signs are responsive to the environment and how it is managed in that territory; the relationship between the hearing mother and deaf daughter is fluid with an intimate coexistence, highlighting moments in which the daughter did not understand the image of the food and made the sign for another food; the hearing mother was incisive in correcting her deaf daughter and explaining that it was a different food
